While mushroom and plant growth varies with the environment\, we can never guarantee what or how much variety will be found – although we will be hunting in an area that has been known to produce mushrooms and edible plants. The real reward is the knowledge you’ll gain to forage confidently on your own. We will also be identifying important trees along the way.\nPotential Finds: Depending on the spring weather\, this could be slightly early for mushrooms. However\, this is the perfect time to find delicious and nutritious springtime plants to harvest\, which could include ramps\, fiddleheads\, watercress\, nettle and more. We will hope for mushrooms like oysters\, morels\, pheasant back and more! This class is unique from others due to the fact that we will be able to harvest edible plants since we are on private property! New this year\, these “Walk in the Park” outings are all about getting outside\, exploring new places\, and seeing what we notice along the trail.\nThe location will vary each time—think of it as an open invitation to come explore together. It may even be somewhere I’ve never visited before. While the general location will be listed\, the exact meeting point will be emailed to attendees at least one day in advance.\nThis isn’t a traditional foraging class or guided hunt. We won’t scout the location ahead of time\, we’ll stick to the trails\, and we may visit parks where foraging isn’t allowed—so there’s nothing to bring and no expectations about what we’ll find. The only thing we’ll be taking is pictures. Some walks may reveal interesting mushrooms and plants\, while others may be quieter—that’s all part of the experience.\nAlong the way\, we’ll observe what’s growing\, talk about mushrooms and wild plants\, and practice identifying trees. If available\, I’ll also bring fresh samples I’ve found recently so you can see what’s currently in season. And if you have any burning questions or recent finds you’d like to ask me about\, feel free to bring those with\, too.\nI certainly don’t know everything\, and that’s part of the fun. These walks are about learning together and sharing observations. If you know about birds\, animals\, lichens\, insects\, or anything else we encounter\, we’d love to learn from you too.\nThese walks are meant to be casual\, curious\, affordable\, and social—perfect for beginners\, returning students\, or anyone who simply wants an excuse to spend time in the woods.\nParticipants should be comfortable being outside and walking for up to 1.5 hours. Together\, we’ll learn all about foraging safely for common\, edible mushrooms.\nWhat to Expect\nInteractive Education: Start with an engaging presentation discussing everything you need to know to get started foraging. We’ll discuss foraging basics\, identification tips\, cooking & preservation techniques\, safety\, technology\, and more. Get hands-on with fresh examples (if available) to practice identifying key features before we head out to the forest.\nForest Exploration: Wander through the woods as we search for and harvest edible wild mushrooms. While mushroom growth varies with the environment\, we can never guarantee what or how much variety will be found – although we will be hunting in an area that has been known to produce mushrooms. The real reward is the knowledge you’ll gain to forage confidently on your own. We will also be identifying important trees along the way.\nPotential Finds: Spring mushrooms like oysters\, morels\, pheasant back\, velvet foot\, and more! While we will focus our hunt on mushrooms\, we will point out edible plants as well. However\, public land does not allow harvesting of plants.\nTaste What We Find: A brief cooking demo and light tasting will be prepared with the mushrooms we find.
